Why there is pain after nail extensions: main reasons and tips

Nail extensions are a popular procedure that allows you to quickly get long, well-groomed and aesthetically pleasing nails. However, immediately after the session, some people experience an unpleasant side effect - painful sensations in the nail plates.
It is important to understand: discomfort is not always directly related to the build-up procedure itself. Let's understand why pain can occur and how to cope with it.
It is important to understand: discomfort is not always directly related to the build-up procedure itself. Let's understand why pain can occur and how to cope with it.
Infection
Bacterial infection is often accompanied by severe pain, redness, increased skin temperature in the affected area, and can also lead to the formation of pus and abscesses. With fungal infections, pain is rare, but it cannot be completely ruled out. A distinctive sign of fungus are changes in the colour and shape of the nails.
Disease
Sometimes nail pain is not just a temporary discomfort, but a possible signal of more serious disorders such as polyosteoarthritis, arthritis or Raynaud's syndrome. Pause and listen to yourself: are there any other warning signs? Reduced finger mobility, numbness, a feeling of constant stiffness - all these are reasons not to postpone a visit to the doctor. Real self-care starts with paying attention to even seemingly insignificant changes.
Allergies
During nail extensions, the master uses various materials, and it is quite possible that you may have an allergic reaction to one of them. It is manifested not only by discomfort, but also by such symptoms as itching, rashes, skin peeling, cracks and inflammation. In severe cases, even onycholysis - detachment of the nail plate from the nail bed - is possible.
Trauma
A bump or pinching of the nail often results in soft tissue trauma, causing pain at the slightest pressure on the nail plate. Such injuries are difficult to miss - they are usually accompanied by swelling, redness of the skin, and in more severe cases, the nail may be deformed or detached from the nail bed.
Technical cause
If the nail is not injured, there are no signs of infection, disease or allergic reaction, a possible cause of pain in the fingers after extensions can be a mechanical impact.
The long nail plate protrudes beyond the edge of the finger and acts as a lever: any pressure on the free edge is amplified and transmitted to the nail bed. Constant pressure can cause micro-traumas to which the body reacts with pain.
Do you often use the tips of your nails in everyday activities? For example, many people involuntarily type with their fingernails rather than the pads of their fingers.
If the specific movement causing the injury can be identified, try to eliminate it or correct the habit. If the cause is not obvious, try shortening the length of the nails - this is often enough to eliminate the discomfort.
