6 things you should never do right after a manicure to keep your nails looking perfect
A regular nail polish manicure can look great for up to a week, but it can lose its flawless appearance in just seconds—especially in the first few hours after leaving the salon. This is when the coating is most vulnerable.

Experts say maintaining a perfect finish is easier than it seems. A little patience and extra attention to your nails can keep your manicure looking fresh for much longer.

How long should you stay in the salon?

For most of us, a manicure is a moment of relaxation—a pleasant pause in the daily rush. But as soon as the final coat of polish is applied, there’s a temptation to get up and hurry off. That’s where the most common mistake happens.

It’s recommended to wait at least 15–20 minutes before leaving the salon and to plan your time accordingly. This is usually enough for the top layer to dry.

However, this is only surface drying. After about 30 minutes, your manicure may seem completely dry, but don’t be misled: it takes several hours for all layers to fully set. During this time, it’s best to avoid anything that could damage the finish.

What should you NOT do in the first 1–2 hours after a manicure?

1. Be careful with keyboards and buttons. Type gently using the pads of your fingers, not your nails.

3. Skip hot showers and saunas. Heat and steam interfere with the setting process and reduce durability. Even with gel polish, it’s best to avoid saunas for at least 24 hours.

4. Don’t go to bed right after your manicure. Bedding can leave marks on your nails, even if the polish feels dry. It’s better to schedule your manicure earlier in the day.

5. Don’t use your nails as tools. Opening lids, peeling stickers, or other “quick fixes” can instantly ruin your manicure.

6. Avoid tight clothing around your hands. Narrow pockets, gloves, or snug sleeves can damage the finish and leave marks.

What to do if your manicure gets damaged

Don’t panic—most issues can be fixed quickly without redoing the entire manicure.

A simple hack: apply a drop of nail polish remover to the damaged area and gently smooth the surface with light, pressure-free movements. Repeat until the flaw disappears, then seal it with a fresh layer of top coat.

Just one simple step—and your manicure will look flawless again, as if nothing ever happened.
